Microsoft has learned a few lessons when it comes to Game Mode.
Windows 11 also includes a Game Mode, but it’s been refined and present from the outset. Windows 10 includes a “Game Mode” which certainly helped with gaming performance issues early in Windows 10’s lifecycle. It’s very much one of the key pillars of the operating system. Of course, that’s not everyone’s experience, but the key point is that Microsoft hasn’t added Game Pass to Windows 11 as an afterthought. Our own experience of using Game Pass on Windows 11 has been free from the performance problems and bugs exhibited under Windows 10. Microsoft has patched much of this on Windows 10 and continues to make it better on the older version of the operating system, but PC Game Pass and the rest of the new Microsoft gaming ecosystem have been built into Windows 11 from the outset. We and other Windows 10 users have experienced many bugs and problems related to corrupted game files, strange Windows Store integration problems, and failed game uninstallations that fail to give back storage space. On Xbox consoles, Game Pass is a seamlessly integrated experience that works flawlessly, but on Windows 10 systems it felt clunky and a little slapped-together. The conclusion, though, seems pretty clear: if the report is true, Windows 12 is only just two short years away.Game Pass is clearly Microsoft’s flagship gaming product, offering day-1 first-party releases and a huge library of third-party games that come and go over time.
Businesses, though, tend to shy away from unexpected updates that could introduce new bugs, so it’s likely that Windows 11’s enterprise customers will have the option to opt out. On the other hand, those who like and appreciate new features and things to play with will be thrilled. Microsoft has also put various Windows applications on their own release schedule, freshening them up with the Windows 11 look and feel or adding new functionality.įor consumers, the new changes may be a bit unsettling, as the ground shifts beneath and operating system they’ve become accustomed to. Microsoft said it would do so through the use of “ experience packs,” bits of code that would basically just show up in Windows Update. Microsoft said in February that it was exploring new ways of rolling out new features for Windows on its own arbitrary schedule. (So far those release dates don’t seem to have been set.) Normally, Microsoft releases feature updates for Windows 10 and 11 twice during the year, in the spring and fall. According to Windows Central, Microsoft plans to begin rolling them out in what it calls “Moments,” or bundles of features delivered at certain times of the year.
The other interesting consequence for consumers is that Windows’ feature updates should become increasingly common.
